"Kilimanjaro
Direct" was established in 2005 with the aim of providing
direct aid to poor families in remote areas in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania.
Initially aid was
given to a small number of families, who were identified by a
street chairman and village chairman. Discussions were held with
the families in advance as to how the aid would be spent. Some
agreed to purchase chickens or set up small businesses. On further
visits a request was made to provide help to improve accommodation
for a disabled man and a woman with five children living in a
shack. Many families are in need of better accommodation as most
live in mud huts with no water or electricity. Fund-raising is
ongoing and projects are monitored and photographed.
It is hoped eventually
to set up a small industry and provide a school for aids orphans
in the region. Depending on funds, accommodation can be improved,
by replacing mud huts with brick houses, built using local materials
and local labour.
