School History

The Presentation Sisters first came to Kilkenny on the 25th September 1800.
They were invited to Kilkenny by Bishop James Lanigan,and the two Sisters took possession of their new home in James's Street.

On 12th October 1800 the Presentation Sisters started the school with sixty pupils- all girls.

When our school started it was situated on James's street, Kilkenny, where Superquinn is situated now.

Today, the Primary School, Scoil Mhuire in Parnell Street, has over 450 pupils on its rolls; the Secondary School in Loughboy has over 600.

The new school, where we are now, in Loughboy was built in 1985.
The Presentation Sisters have lived and worked in Kilkenny for over 200 years.

Nano Nagle

Nano Nagle was born in 1718 in Ballygriffin Co.Cork. She was taugth at a hedge school in the ruins of Monanimy Castle. When she was 13 Nano was sent to France to be edcucated. She entered a convent in France. She returned to Ireland and in 1754 Nano`s first school opened in Cork.

She founded her first convent in Ireland in 1777. She spent all her time with the poor people and neglected herself. She got sick and collapsed in Cross Street. She died on the 26th of april 1784. Her last words were "Look after the children, the children of the poor."
